The images of black people in art are a reflection of the long and diverse history of black people in Europe. In Britain, the first official historical record of an African is in Carlisle, at a Roman military settlement - around 210 ad.

Africans arrived in Southern Europe during the fourth and fifth centuries, but their influence and impact was most strongly felt when they marched as Moorish conquerors into Spain and Portugal in the eighth century – 711AD. Under the command of Tarik, the Moors occupied and infiltrated into Europe for over four centuries, despite vehement attempts to expel their rule. Moorish blood quickly absorbed into noble families, so much so that Napoleon notoriously proclaimed: “Africa begins in the Pyrenees”.
